# Social Media Can Reduce Misinformation When Public Scrutiny is High

The study finds that while Chinese local governments have exaggerated GDP, using social media for public communications can decrease misreporting in areas with high public scrutiny, contradicting the belief that social media mainly spreads misinformation.
